Yes, China is largely impoverished. But China is also large. Unless USA Today is grossly incorrect, the relatively miniscule middle class is not all that much smaller than ours.

OT to India. Yes I read a CBS report (sorry, don't have the link here) that India has the second largest middle class, to the U.S. Same principal applies - a smaller percentage of a larger population, surpasses Japan, Germany, France, etc.
