But some leverage
Let's say home PC sales lag in China for a while. Incidentally, I have seen articles elsewhere that talk of PCs being far less expensive and some government subsidy, so I think the truth will fall somewhere between the extremes that have appeared here.

But the Chinese initiatives might contribute to breaking the horns of another dilemma. As many have pointed out, Linux as of yet is strictly a business proposition. The home market is zilch, which means nobody is investing in support, which inhibits market growth, etc... And BTW, Microsoft seems to recognize that this is "their" market, what with the Gates interview on "convergence," the WMP bruhaha, etc.

But recall that Dell has now committed to support Linux. http://zdnet.com.com/5208-1104-0.html?forumID=1&threadID=763&messageID=13801&start=-1

This means that at least one major player may begin to pre-position a support capability for the time when a glimmer of demand shows. And remember, not all home computers are used for games, music, TV, etc. When somebody steps forward with the PC pre-loaded with the OS and the office suite, that's one heck of a value proposition! Might happen.

Yeah, Linux at home is still an orphan. But maybe not quite a waif.
