PDF's are fine for look or print but don't touch.
I wrote a few example of situations like adding a new line to a graph in a .pdf, but suffice it that .pdf is not the most responsive format.
There's use for a document that's hard to change, but the alternative is useful also.

And on substantially larger file sizes of .pdf's, I'll have to take your word for your examples. Mine show huge .pdf's.

I will give Adobe credit for making Acrobat / Reader load more quickly in more recent versions. I once had to use software which kept certain plug-ins from starting so that a .pdf would open before lunch.

For hands-on work, I'll take Word. It appears there's more room to differ than I thought.
