It's all about PRIORITIES!
``One area of focus is making the OS easier to tailor to the specific role that a server is performing, such as Web server or file and print server. In doing so, Microsoft hopes the OS will be easier to use and more secure.''

So the this multibillion piece of 'sophisticated' s/w has the .... ability to appear to pretend that it can be a print server OR a file server OR a web server OR.... Does this mean that the current MS server offerings are so louzy that they cannot even do these tasks right? Or, if the current MS server can do all these tasks simultaneously, WHAT is the additional funcitonality in longhorn's pretending that it can do these things separately?

No. Any Windows server version, currently on the market (not to mention those that have passed into obsolecence) can do these tasks simultaneously. The idea of configuring a server as a web server or file/print server or SQL server or whatever has to do with which tasks are given priority over the other. It's like this: does the machine handle the print job you just sent it first, or does it first handle the request for the web page(s) coming through from the outside? Should it open start letting you open that app over your network or should it start handling that SQL query from down the hall?

So the 'terminal server' function is going to get better after 2007 in MS serfvers! Remarkable INcompetence. Any decent OS, even the OLD behemoths of the late 60's had decent support for TIME-SHARING MULTIUSER LOGONs.

News flash! Windows NT 4.0 had a Terminal Services version. Terminal Services have also been an add-on you can install after the fact (one of those pesky server configuration options we discussed previously) in Windows 2000 Server AND 2003 Server.

The fact that they are working to improve the product - DUH - is a no brainer. That IS, after all, what they're supposed to be doing. Isn't that what happens when you produce a new version of your OS?

As for having a home version of Server, I'd say that could be a pretty cool thing. Given the trend of convergence of multimedia devices (TV, HDTV, DVD players, etc...), computers, Wifi networking/sharing of files in house, and the like, it would be nice to have a server product that could handle the traffic, and maybe handle stuff like parental controls, as well as function as a lowly file and print server. Would be nice, for instance, to say, share a file via the wireless home network, but only limit it to mom and dad's bedroom and the den - but NOT say, Jr's room.

The possibilities are endless.
