More Breakthroughs are at hand ...
``Windows Server boss Bob Muglia has previously said that Longhorn Server will bring several changes.''

Good; let's see what is there.

``One area of focus is making the OS easier to tailor to the specific role that a server is performing, such as Web server or file and print server. In doing so, Microsoft hopes the OS will be easier to use and more secure.''

So the this multibillion piece of 'sophisticated' s/w has the .... ability to appear to pretend that it can be a print server OR a file server OR a web server OR.... Does this mean that the current MS server offerings are so louzy that they cannot even do these tasks right? Or, if the current MS server can do all these tasks simultaneously, WHAT is the additional funcitonality in longhorn's pretending that it can do these things separately? And people will have to wait until some unspecified time in 2007 (or 2008 or 2009 ....) to be able to do .... separagely what they can do now simultaneously? Yes, it makes so much sense... Common Muglia BS.

``Other planned features include improvements in terminal services and rights management, along with new management features and changes that Muglia said will reduce the need for system reboots.''

So the 'terminal server' function is going to get better after 2007 in MS serfvers! Remarkable INcompetence. Any decent OS, even the OLD behemoths of the late 60's had decent support for TIME-SHARING MULTIUSER LOGONs. Does anyone recall CTSS or even CICS or even VM? Let alone ofcouse UNIX.... Unbelievable: the time-sharing has been around since EARLY 60's. But MS just started figuring it out. Good show Muglia: I hope you are making Hundreds of 1000s of $$ in a well-earned salary....

``During Wednesday's Web chat, Muglia also hinted that Microsoft may be considering a home version of its server OS at some point.''

That's right! A 'server class' OS that can pretend to be ... a print server, etc. that is SO GOOD that there make it also even LESS capable so that it can pretend it is a home PC OS.

``"We are always looking for new opportunities where server technology can be leveraged, and the home definitely represents an exciting new area that we are looking at along with many others," Muglia said. "Much of the great storage, replication and management technology would be great in a home. We have seen many people install Small Business Servers at home, which really works quite well."''

That's right! More decisive steps towards the WRONG direction. Instead of having a decent server product for more sophisticated environments and a desktop veriosn for office and home they have decided to .... provide a beefed up home/server edition with advanced storage replication, because now 'people work at home' ...

``A Microsoft representative declined to comment further on any home server plans. ''

That is a wise move, since the more they reveal their 'great' (grandiowse) ideas the more they embarass themselves...

So what again is the advantage of longhorn for the heavy duty organizations? A better print server?

Overall, this goes to show that they have NOT YET realized how Mickey Mouse/Barbie level toys they offer ....

good show Muglia! No its time to explain to us that revolutionary car design you have in mind that can carry people of different genders, different colors, different heights, etc. SIMULTANEOUSLY. That would be a .... great breakthrough wink
