CSS Region coding (a form a digital restriction) existed long before anyone could copy a DVD.

Circuit city's DIVX (DVDs with DRM) was tried before DVD writers existed, it wasn't tried then as a piracy measure, rather as a "make more profit" rental model.

If a seller can sell the same thing to you twice, its just another way of doubling the price. DRM lets them do it, so sellers will always be trying these DRM schemes.

If DRM is to work at penalising piracy then it should be applied to the pirate customers, not the paying ones. Yet these DRM schemes simply apply the penalty to the paying customers.

It just puts off paying customers without stopping pirating, not a very good strategy.
