confusing innovation with lots of money.
If you look at the history of "Innovation" you will find the little guys usually come up with great things, because they do not have the resources to just make it bigger (i.e. Ford wants a faster car they add more cu.inches or cylinders, the same goes to all of the american car builders other more innovative companies build smaller, faster, better motors, ). SPOT technology is not much different then pager technology, just pushed a little since processors and ram are physically smaller now and MS has the money to build out the network that will push it rather then have to find investors. All these features in Spot can be found in todays $50 cellphones. Innovation is more like the Cobalt Qubes and raq servers which created a market with a small company can have a reliable network enviorment. When Big money (Sun)obtained them, they did not know what to do with it and killed it. MS has really stopped Innovating because they are too worried about losing market share. ATI and it's All-in-Wonder product is a better PVR then Windows Media center. You can add that card and software solution to any avg pc and get very good results, without buying a new pc. The real struggle in the tech world is to keep the big companies from locking out all the small companies that innovate because they do more with less. Why do you think he mentioned the need for a "standard media player" We need standard media formats not players. If that was the case why would anyone ever build a better radio? Radio waves are standard. But the Radio's are all different features and folks can use them pretty easily. TVs are the same data singal is standard so you can buy any brand and with all the features you want. What Bill Gates is proposing that make things easy you have all have the same TV, Radio, DVD player, Microwave, Oven,.... in order to make it simple. Guess what? all these things are simple to use. MS and Bill Gates do not truely innovate they just have enough money and marketshare to push out products.
