I am not one of the ones who feel that Windows (or Linux) is the be-all and end-all of operating systems (my personal favorite has always been VMS). Just like any other software, the OS needs competition to maintain its edge. Linux is now beginning to provide that pressure on Windows. By the same token, it would be bad for there to be no OS but Linux in the world, open-source notwithstanding. Multiple authors contributing ideas to one OS is not the same as competing OS's. Let's hope that both Linux and Windows can thrive and "feed" off each other, making both better as time goes by.
And, getting back to the topic, the same applies to Java and .NET -- we need competition for Java, not just multiple contributors to Java.
