Ahhh...but I have actual facts to back up my arguments
Visual Studio 6 had support for multiple programming languages starting long before the .NET Framework. See for yourself on Microsoft.com if you're interested. Or, better yet, buy a copy and see for yourself since I'm sure you won't trust Microsoft.

Regarding multi-language support, here are a few links to get you started. Now I suppose all of these companies could be building these development tools just for the heck of it but my guess is they're doing it because they have customers who want them.

For information on a Fortran for the .NET Framework: http://www.salfordsoftware.co.uk/

For info on Cobol for the .NET Framework: http://www.adtools.com/info/whitepaper/net.html

For info on Perl for the .NET Framework:
http://www.activestate.com/Corporate/Initiatives/NET/Research.html?_x=1

For info on RPT for the .NET Framework:
http://www.asna.com/AVRNET.asp

I could list many more. Just do a google search for "language .NET" or "programming language .NET"

Cheers
