Isn't competition wonderful?
If it weren't for Visual Basic, would there be such a push to make Java development tools more user-friendly? If it weren't for Java, would .NET even exist?

There is room for both. .NET is pushing Java to develop in ways that were not considered just a few years ago. Likewise, Java and OSS are forcing Microsoft to evolve (slowly, to be sure, but it is happening).

I say, let both of them exist. As long as web services can interact, it doesn't really matter what platform you use or what language.
