LAMP is a god-send to small/medium sized businesses.
LAMP can be an excellent alternative. I have installed and configured more than a dozen LAMP servers to create websites for small and medium sized businesses. These business simply couldn't afford the Microsoft, Sun, or IBM solutions for a variety of reasons : partially licensing and partially development costs.

Yes, several were excited by the possibilities offered by the open-source model, but most were pragmatically selecting LAMP as a cost-effective option. Generally, they were looking for a secure and stable platform which would provide a foundation from which to build future growth.

Most of these business are concentrating on their core competencies, not IT. Several do not even have an IT staff. No-one wished to learn to perform the constant maintenance demanded by MS Windows IIS systems, and the LAMP systems freed them from the constant barrage of attacks on MS Windows. Yes, the systems still need to be updated and maintained (as all do) but the volume is significantly less.

Basically, LAMP provided a secure and stable alternative which these smaller companies could actually afford - and that is where LAMP really shines (pardon the pun).

Regards,
Jon
