LAMP is inexpensive, but not very robust
LAMP has been around for a while. A couple of years ago I thought it was a good replacement for windows DNA based solutions. PHP is more object oriented and more flexible than conventional ASP. However I don't think it doesn't compare well against .NET and J2EE. It's not as object oriented, and as far as web programming it doesn't have server side objects that are event driven. Both .NET and J2EE lend themselves to making web applications better designed and easier to maintain. PHP is still very loose, and because of it's dependence on scripting versus compiled objects, it's not as efficient. But who knows what the future holds? The fact that there is a third solution that is completely open source throughout the platform can only be a good thing.
