RE: Yes and no...
?A power user will find there is more maintenance, but that is true of both platforms. (Try setting up a Mac server in a cluster.)?

A Mac cluster server is a red herring to the topic at hand which is desktops. As for more maintenance, I would have to say that a Windows box required more than any other platform out there. Not that the others don't require it, just not at the same level or frequency as Windows.

?But for the average user, allowing automatic updates does the job for them and they need not be concerned.?
No, you are wrong, automatic updates still requires some user interaction. Then you blatantly didn't mention the other support software that is needed to keep a Windows machine alive on the net. Things like Anti-Virus, Anti-Adware, Anti-Spyware and of course a firewall. All these pieces need to be maintained as well. Plus in order to ensure you are truly clean and safe you should run at least 2 AV because as I have noticed, some things get by one that don't get by another. You should run at least 3 anti-spyware tools, and 3 anti-adware tools for the same reason as running multiple AV. This is to ensure you are truly safe and clean on the net, then factor in you have to change your surfing habits to be more paranoid than a Mac or Linux user would have to be.
