As I understand it the features that will be unique to Longhorn are the use of DirectX and 3D for the UI (Avalon will be available for XP, but will lack the UI graphics acceleration, and I think won't have the 3D features available). Longhorn is said to be more secure than XP. They decided to use Windows Server 2003 (presumably the kernel) as their code base for it, rather than XP. There may be some collaboration features built into it. I've heard MS has been working on that. I've heard that there will be some form of optimized desktop search in it as well, though it will not be WinFS.
Otherwise, you're right. I haven't heard about anything else that will be unique to it. I keep waiting to hear if they're going to change the desktop metaphore to something that makes it as easy to run internet apps. from the Start menu/icon, as it is to run desktop apps. They've been saying since they announced Longhorn development that they're going to "blur the line" between the desktop and the internet. XAML/Avalon is a big part of that, but they've gotta get some internet functionality integrated into the desktop UI as well, IMO. - Posted by: Mark Miller Posted on: 06/08/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
