Not just PostgreSQL
MaxDB is also available as an open source db. It originated as the db supporting SAP, who turned the code over to the MySQL folks. More info at http://www.mysql.com/products/maxdb/ on it. It is definitely industrial strength.

I found PostgreSQL's toolset to be very rudimentary, although that may have changed in the last couple of years. For some reason, I couldn't see myself learning C just to define a custom datatype...
