Hey I have one of those too! But I deleted XP the second I got it home and installed SuSE 9.0 with a small partition with FreeBSD.

Anti-Virus Software - Not Required = $0.00

Firewall Software - Came with systems = $0.01 (estimated based on number of software applications that I got with my SuSE 9.0 Pro system which cost $79.00 +tax)

Spyware software - Not Required (thats a windows thing) = $0.00

Pop-Up Add blockers - Came with browser(s) (Mozilla and Opera) = $0.01

Development Tools: The following came with my SuSE system, again cost is figured based on actual outlay and the total number of applications I got.
Ajunta C/C++ = $0.01
KDevelop = $0.01
Glade Interface Designer C/C++ = $0.01
Qt Designer = $0.01
Eclipse JAVA IDE = $0.01
At least 7 various editors that I can use for whatever scripting I need to do.
Quanta HTML Editor = $0.01
Blue Fish HTML Javascript Editor = $0.01
Open Office Writer/Web = $0.01
MySQL Database Client and Server = $0.01

Just to name a few, and I selected them when I installed. And the ones I forgot... I installed and didn't need a reboot! Install and use!

Also I have a full and complete Office Suite with Open Office 1.1, or KOffice, or Gnome Office Tools

All for the low price of $79.00 +tax and of course the silly laptop, which I am still trying to get my money back for the crap os that came on it.

Bottom line, I still paid less than you, got more than you are more secure than you and definitly more stable than you... er okay my laptop against yours. If I need to patch, well I do it on one desktop while I am coding on another, so when the download and install is complete I continue to work without a forced reboot. And when I select the required patches... all are installed when I select them, no download one then reboot, then go back and reselect the one I had selected earlier but was pre-empted by the first one and so forth. I select what I need, start the download then go back to work. When it's done I click on finish and the system writes the appropriate files and closes the update window and I am done.

As far as GUI, I or any person with a little patience can make a Linux box look like a winXP box, but why? Black Box is the way to go! Slick, clean and fast. Oh sorry I am bored silly waiting for my office IT folks to get my stupid Dell WinXP system back up and running... I am sending this via SuSE! Peace out!
