Another desperate MS integration measure
In MS Office at present every product has it's own file formats and thus data can only be read with the application that created it.

So from a data management perspective Office is a 1960s era product.

Now along comes XML. XML effectively emulates the hierarchical structure of COBOL file descriptions.

The new office is therefore from a data management perspective a 1970s era product.

Will Bill Gates someday get a clue about data management?

Will the rest of the industry take this as clear signal that XML is a bad idea? They definitely should.

The other message is that attempts to integrate disparate products using object orientated methods have failed at MS and can be pretty much guaranteed to fail elsewhere.
