Says who?
"I suppose Microsoft could have wrote it to talk to Linux or MAC's but the that population of users don't buy Microsoft based products."

I will have you know, just the other day I bought a copy of Microsoft C++ .net Standard 2003, and two years ago I bought Microsoft Office XP Academic Edition.

I bought the C++ IDE just so I could work on OpenOffice.org on my PC, just so I don't have to go out and buy Microsoft Office 2003 Professional.

Aren't I the smart consumer!

Someday I will actually buy a copy of Microsoft Windows XP too. It will probably be an OEM copy that I purchase with a Laptop.

Other Microsoft Products that I have purchased in the past include Microsoft Windows 98SE OEM, two copies of Microsoft Windows 95b OEM, a copy of Microsoft Windows 3.1 OEM, a copy of Microsoft DOS 6.22.

Microsoft doesn't care to write hardware to talk to Mac or Linux or FreeBSD for that matter simply because such would not be in the best interest of the company, kindof like Microsoft Pocket PC, I don't think any of them yet talk to Linux or Mac or FreeBSD.
