That can't be what they patented
If they've been allowed to patent watching one show while recording another, that's absurd.

If they've been allowed to patent putting those functions in one box, that's still absurd.

However, in developing their product, which allows watching the same show you are currently recording, from the start, with no breaks, they must have made worthwhile innovations, and patented them. This is what they're suing to protect. Although patents can be struck down in court, too - or a court can find that the patent, good or bad, hasn't been infringed.
