Your point is valid but
You have to consider that anyone who can claim they own something will fight to keep the laws as they are if the laws are benifitial to them. A great example of this is slavery. Slave owners argued bitterly and even went to war several times over it.

I think it would be silly to expect the owners under the current system to complain about the laws the benifit them.

Still you point is valid. The question is more about the copyright laws themselves. Is it right to demand other countries follow US extreme copyright laws? Personally I think if you want IP respected in countries then you must fix your laws at home because demanding another country use US style laws will guarantee nothing occurs.
