Postgresql did make similar gains
You just never heard about it. Remember, there's nothing to be gained by telling your competition you've found the holy grail of fast, reliable, enterprise class databases and it's free. Then you lose your advantage. So, it's not at all uncommon for a big company to start using postgresql, have a user post to the pgsql-general mailing list to ask questions, but not be able to tell you exactly what they're doing or who for.

Note that Postgresql had a huge gain this last year when it became the database of choice for backing both the .info and .org domains. Oracle screamed and moaned that Postgresql just wasn't up to the job, and enough people believed it that the register even had an article eviscerating afilias and their choice of Postgresql when some idiot there thought the entire .org domain was down when his ancient flavor of whois, which didn't point at the new servers didn't show a result for anything in .org. The best postgresql ever got was a hemming and hawing semi-apology.

Judging by the amount of traffic the postgresql lists get, I'd be willing to bet it's grown just as much as MySQL this year, it just hasn't gotten as much press because neither the companies deploying it are bragging about it, nor is there a company behind it, like MySQL AB which can issue press releases every 14 days or so.
