This CIO questions these results...
I just can?t believe anyone in their right mind would hire someone with such a closed mind as Mike Cox as a CIO. But I?m sure Mike?s response was targeted at anyone that wants a fight. I sure got a laugh at this simpleton?s attitude (real or not). I?m sure there are those as closed minded, but I doubt Mike is really one of them. He?s just trying to rattle cages. But I digress...

There are several reasons for the momentum. The economy was a big reason. And the costs of hardware have gone down while the performance has gone up. Now the slower solutions are up to par with the commercial ones (even the inferior products now can handle the loads with the improved hardware). Another big reason is Linux and its open source counterparts are not as ?scary? to executives anymore. Computers are recognized as an important part of business and the computer and software costs do not warrant the same expensive commercial products as they did before. You are not nearly as tied to UNIX, Microsoft or any platform like you were in the past. More and more people are just not as afraid of the technology anymore.

Lastly, the media has had an effect on this. You cannot pick up a paper or trade publication without Linux or Microsoft somewhere on the publication. This is how Microsoft gained (and still does gain) in popularity. Just think about how many times you?ve seen something about Longhorn. I see very little benefit in this news this early in the game. Sometimes the press helps the industry and sometimes they dish out complete rubbish. In the past the lemmings just followed the crowd (press). But this has changed since the lemmings are much smarter than before. There are still a lot of lemmings out there though.
