Reference to the survey?
I would like to see IBM's survey results, if anybody has a reference. This implication of groundbreaking advance on the part of small business runs counter to what I am seeing. Every few weeks at business forums we are provided insights into initiatives of the Fortune 50 to enhance IT effectiveness and efficiency, and it seems pretty clear that large firms are the ones on the leading edge of Linux adoption.

This impression is further strengthened by the examples of the small to medium organizations we've acquired over the past year or so. With them we have inherited both Windows servers and legacy client-server applications that will have to be supported as exceptions until they can be integrated into enterprise architecture. While these smaller guys may have wanted to transform their IT, they have lacked the knowledge and resources to do so.

My suspicion is that the respondents to IBM's survey have been reading business press (Business Week, WSJ, IBD), and want to make the move, but don't yet know how. I'll stick by my bet that major enterprise will be the leaders here and that small/medium business will follow.
