Is this just to stir up cursing responses?
First of all I can't imagine any CIO reading this topic and having the time or energy to respond, so I first question the validity of "this CIO" at all. However, that point aside, it should be noted that SQLServer by itself on a single server does rather well (as long as that server is a Microsoft server of course). But mySQL on Linux is so cheap that you can actually have twice the number of servers that you would for basically the save cost (about 10 more expensive for double the 2 processor server). Therefore, from a scaling perspective, using mySQL for compartmentalized data marting that dispurses the load across double the servers is of great advantage ( because no matter how much ram or processors you have there is still only one bus). If "this CIO" has all his money wrapped into Microsoft then perhaps its best that he keep that scenerio at his location. However, if he is building software to "sell" then he would have to add the SQLServer expense to each unit he sold. This would either drive up the cost of the product or drag down the profit margin, and neither is good for the bottom line.

BTW, perhaps your MCSE has realized that the market isn't as tight as it once was. All those 60k/year HTML "programmers" have gone off to other industries. Perhaps you should stop putting your developers "to the carpet" and start letting them do the job the best way they know how or you may wake up to find an empty cube where he/she once worked. If you want unthinking machines you should outsource your app development. 1/6th the cost and half the innovation.
