PostgreSQL vs mySQL
This is an interesting question, given both mySQL and PostgreSQL are both included in typical Linux distributions.

While PostgreSQL has some strong corporate backing, I think the business culture at mySQL probably contributed to the enhanced popularization of the database. For a long time now they have offered the database free for personal use but you are expected to ante up when the database becomes part of a commercially deployed system. This gives them a financial base.
More recently mySQL.org has become mySQL.com with a slicker home page and more business like support.

The database also has had some very impressive benchmarks to brag about as well.

It reminds me a bit of the KDE vs Gnome interface issue. Inevitably one is going to get more popular than the other.
