Oracle is not well postioned at the low end. License costs historically have not been very competitive. Conversely, MySQL is not perceived as being performance-competitive at the high end, where Oracle and DB2 fight it out (although I believe I have seen a report that disputes this).

But it is reasonable to expect the open source products to continue to grow and eventually to threaten the likes of Oracle. This might be in part what prompts Oracle to move into ERP, etc, and presumably gives the PeopleSoft acquisition stategic importance.
