I see no solution to Microsoft's pricing model other than discounters or Academic versions...BUT...on the hardware side, there are numerous available means of saving money. The emerging spate of massive hardware redesigns mean than all of the vendors are going to be cutting prices as they attempt to reduce inventories of current "Top of the Line" components. As PCI-X, the new CPU architectures, and the new HD technology, are announced or introduced, the pricing curve on the technology that they replace heads downward. Take the same approach that businesses take and run just behind the "bleeding edge" with your hardware purchases. Neither Microsoft or anyone else is going to alienate the owners of current technology in favor of a new approach. Even though Microsoft is motivating change in the hardware industry; they cannot afford to abandon the market that they've established around existing technology.
If their history indicates their future, they are going to release a product that is percieved as better by the middle of their market strata, and that is less than perfect for the extremes.
Put a group of IT professionals or hobbyists together for 5 minutes and you can write a dissertation on the flaws in the various MS operating systems. Do exactly the same with a group of Home or Business USERS and you could write a document of equal length on the "marvelousness" of this piece of software that allows them to actually do things that benefit them with high technology.

Believe it or not, the second group in all of their international incarnations are the people who keep the lights on at Redmond.

It's called business
