- Done! OOo 2.0 beta ships with filters
-
The latest release of OOo 2.0 beta (9.104) ships with installed filters for MS file formats and MS XML file formats. OpenDocument is supported by IBM WorkPlace, Novell Office, Redhat, Linspire, Xandros, Mepis, Ubunto, and a host of other Linux distributions.
IBM Workplace is the only other cross platform distro, besides OOo and StarOffice, that runs on the many Widows distros as well as Linux. Sun is planning on releasing a Windows version of the Java Desktop, which would further accelerate the expansion of OpenDoc to cover not just Office Suite applications, but the entire desktop productivity envionment.
The next release of KDE KOffice will support OpenDoc natively. The recent GPL of QT Libs on Windows will soon enough lead to a version of KOffice supporting OpenDoc on the many Windows distros as well as Linux.
Adobe does not yet support OpenDoc, but the the OASIS OpenDoc TC (Technical Committee) has reached out to Adobe, requesting support for including Adobe XMPP metadata in a future upgrade of OpenDoc. It's a tough choice for Adobe, sinc ethey have bet the farm on PDF. But PDF is not a structured file format. Only the XMPP metadata facilitation enbables a fractional structuring of what would otherwise be possible with the fully structured and highly extensible OpenDoc.
OBTW, Oracle Collaboration Suite fully supports OpenDoc. The EU has mandated OpenDoc support as an absolute requirement, although it is true that they have wobbled somewhat in accepting the OpenDoc filters for proprietary MSXML and MS file formats as a means of meeting OpenDoc requirements.
And don't discount the many enterprise publication and content management applications - service providers that are already using OpenDoc as a common "transformation layer" between legacy applications and emerging platforms. These include Stellent, ArborText, and Boeing. Documentum is a registered member of the OpenDoc TC but has yet to declare publicly their implementation.
