OpenDocument Supported Widely
It doesn't have to be supported by Microsoft. It is already supported by IBM, Sun, & KDE, aside from the OOo team. The problem with Microsoft's format is that it is unpublished, and thus makes a poor format to adopt as a standard. It is the unpublished nature of Msft's format that makes it so difficult for others to develop interoperable apps. A de facto "standard" is not necessarily a valuable standard.

The OASIS approval makes it easier for government agencies and businesses to adopt Open<ocument. This means they'll be able to gain much wider acceptance now. With other apps from major players supporting it, Microsoft will essentially paint themselves into a corner because they don't want to play nice.
