So why don't they do that with ...
Now that they have a standard open document format, why not do the same thing with a package management format - one for source, and one for binary? That way, all packages would be built the same way and you could use any package manager you wanted, as long as it worked around the standard? Then, you could have one team of volunteers build a package and have it work on ANY distro or package manager.
