much better phrase without "internet"
"father of the web" (not the internet) is a much better title. The IT press has forgotten the difference between inventing a technology and putting it to use. I'm not trying to belittle the work of "Sir Tim" but he simply did not invent the technology. Henry Ford did not invent the assembly line but he might be considered the "father of the mass production" in the automobile industry.

The words "invent" and "patent" should rarely be used in the software industry. We've seen plenty of abuse recently for these concepts. "Copyright" is more appropriate. A majority of software (including Sir Tim's web) is putting together existing technology in much the same way as book authors put together words. The public just happened to favor Sir Tim's version of document sharing. Moreover, he had a wealth of expertiese and collaboration at CERN. Certainly, he did not work alone.

Much of this is the result of a British desire to claim a stake in the web as a source of national pride. This whole concept of "Nobility" lends credibility to one person taking the credit for the work of many. I wouldn't want to take this away from my British friends but IT professionals should be a bit more professional about interpreting events. If not, we forget all of those forgotten commoners(just like us) whose work was critical to the creation to our world wide web.
