Document servers, data servers, hypertext markup languages, document browsers, etc. all existed before the current version of what we now know as the world wide web. Berners-Lee no more invented the web than Bill Gates invented the operating system. SGML, one of the foreruners of HTML was standardized (ISO 8879) around 1986 with a significant contribution done at CERN by Anders Berglund long after the concepts were conceived at IBM.
Computer people are prone to hero worship and this is one example. If the claim of invention were not proposterous, Berners-Lee would hold all of the property rights and have more money than Gates.
