Peer-to-peer is quite capable of secure storage and tracking multiple updates and changes. You need to get out more, Don.

Central-server architectures (MSOffice), distributed-server architectures (Domino), and fully-distributed architectures (AFS and related systems), and even trivial check-in/out (CVS, OpenOffice, most EDA tools, etc.) all have weak points regarding scalability or point-of-failure. You picks your poison.

All but the largest collaboration projects do quite nicely with any of them. Since the largest document collaboration projects are orders of magnitude smaller than EDA projects (which don't strain even the simplest models) and not even in the same continent as the F/OSS programming projects that actually do strain systems like CVS, the close tie between MSOffice and MS servers is of no benefit to anyone but Microsoft.
