Keep in mind that any shop that uses Excel for accounting or payroll is of necessity a very small shop. This leads to the suggestion that precious little collaboration is needed, and in fact having more than one person doing the books is likely to be problematic regardless of the tool set.

Now, let's look at what the "collaboration support" entails: a "collaboration server" from (none other) Microsoft. This, in a small shop that most likely has nothing but desktop machines until now, nor needed any.

Read between the lines. The current Office (2k3) already pops up untold messages advertising how much more it could do if it only had proper servers support. Expect O2K6 to be even more dependent on a server, perhaps to the extent that those "Excel-only" shops won't be able to do without one once they "upgrade."
