RE: You're being disengenous
There are many many "widgets" built completely in the
.NET Framework. Check out http://www.gotdotnet.com/ for
dozens of examples. Microsoft itself is re-writing
significant portions of many of their applications in
managed code. If you're following Longhorn, the new
graphics libraries (called Avalon) is all written in managed
code. But these things take time. Re-writing an application
to take advantage of any new runtime (Java or CLR) is a big
job. The payoff...hopefully...will be worth it b/c the code
will be more stable and secure. The pains of Win32
development with DLL Hell etc. will largely be gone. The
only real question is whether the marketplace will wait. The
world is littered with the bodies of people who
underestimated MS...

1) No details have emerged regarding Avalon. How can you
comment on something that hasn't even seen the light of
day.

2) Managed C++ is meant to be the holy grail of "porting to
.NET". Funny, Microsoft has $50billion and 40,000
employees and still can't deliver.

3) .NET is still heavily reliant on win32. The day Microsoft
say they're going to rip out win32, win16 and OS/2
support, then I will start believing that they're serious about
doing something to improve Windows.
