Indeed, presaging the future
An of course Office System is what amounts to .NET in stealth form. What we see here is MS Office transformed into Microsoft's base vehicle for launching what amounts to subscription software. Those 700 partners may be in for a bonanza, but if so it will be a monumental wallet-drain of perpetual pay for end users.

The approach is brilliant: Office has now been injected so as to virtually stuff full the nascent web serivices space, so that if that market approach was ever to have legs, it can now walk only on proprietary MS legs.

And the MS proprietary desktop is assured future sales, since what we now will see will not be lightweight web-based apps, but web apps in name only, all tethered to the bloatmeister itself--MS Office as we have always known it, but now in a super-expensive form if we must help author XML schemas or deal with DRM in a practical way,

MS has done with Office what it did with Internet Explorer: Replaced emergent standards with what amounts to a proprietary module that guarantees--standard XML or no--that MS is at the heart of at all.
