Re-take your logic class, please.
"..any distribution of Linux that would meet the requirements of
the target market have system requirements that exceed that of
Windows XP."

The target market in this case is users of older computers - which can't run XP anyways, so using the features of XP as a base comparison is illogical.

"I've install Fedora Core 3 on a Pentium II 233MHz with 128MB of
RAM. Paging made the system unusable (yes I disabled many
services on this system in an effort to reduce the pagining).
Windows XP on the same machine ran reasonable well."

a) Please ensure you have truly equivalent feature sets on both OSes to ensure a valid comparison.

b) Please define "reasonably well" - I personally am very suspicious about your claim about running XP on a 233 MHz machine "reasonably well."

In any case, I think David Mohring in a later post has a valid point - if you make XP as safe a Linux, does XP still run as well?

c) Ensure you're using a good paging setup, and that the paging problem is truly the result of the OS, not the result of user error.

d) Ensure this is NOT just a problem with Red Hat - try other verisions of Linux as well.

e) Do a check to figure out what's taking all the resources, and make sure you're not running something extra that could invalidate the comparison.

OK, I think that's enough. Over and out.
