One possible view...
Is that moving to a "better" OS is tougher than one might think. Especially with an installed base that must be supported as you move forward. I'll discount Linux for the moment (small installed base of applications to support) and say that moving forward seems to be very hard for all the vendors.

My wife just installed the newest version of OSX on her Mac and while it has some new bells and whistles, it's pretty much the same as the last version. Same for Windows and Solaris. They are fundamentally the same thing with small steps in evolution.

What must be very frustrating is these companies know where they want to go and what they want to build, but they just can't do it, at least on a timely schedule. (I say timely as they set their announced release plans.)

The other possibility? Sun sailed their racing yacht on to the Microsoft rocks.
