Afraid to learn something new
This just something I've notice over the years. It happened when Windows 95 came out the DOS/Win 3.1 users were exactly the same way.

It works like this. People get to know a system and then they get a level of power, hence the name power user. This gives those people a level of respect. They are the ones called upon in office to fix the small problem. These people like that. Then you show them something new, back in the day it was Windows 95, in 2000 it W2K, and now it's Linux. With the new system the power these individuals had is stripped away and that is a blow to the ego. This causes resisistance. They are afraid to learn something new.

Also to resistance to saving money is another factor. If you forked out $1000 on Microsoft software from the OS to Office to what ever else only to have some twit show you how you wasted your money how would you react. I'd bet defensively and put down all that free software as useless to save face.
