Unemployed Programmers bad for proprietory software
One reason to think twice about laying off your expensive US programmers and replacing them with cheap offshore ones: they're probably not going to stop programming. Either they will look for another programming job and program in their spare time just to keep in practice; or they'll start their own businesses (and maybe compete with you); or they'll go into another line of work and become amateur programmers. From the proprietory developer's point of view, the last scenario is by far the most dangerous, because professional caliber amateur programmers are prime candidates for participation in open source projects designed to compete against proprietory software (they have no reason not to).

If proprietory software survives, it will be in spite of, not because of industry lobbyists.
