Interesting.

It wouldn't be bad for MS to offer RedHat the capability to read and write Office docs. Then RedHat can resell a binary package or rpm to customers. Due to the open nature, the rpm could be used on other distros too, still sold by Redhat and whomever joins, but still the same rpm.

RedHat will need to be careful about the deals it makes, since it is risking the fedora community's loyalty.

I don't see where MS is going with this. The office thing will probably cost them too much (in terms of losing desktop market control) and is not worth the trouble. They obviously aren't going to really open up anything. If they don't do that, exactly what are they going to bring to the table. Open source is already offering everything. The nature of the GPL doesn't ban MS from using products licensed under it. So I doubt the community can offer anything more without undermining the corner stones of its existance.

MS wants to build bridges, but are they willing to build the kind the community will accept and use?

Is this just another PR thing? If so, for who? For the current customers, the people on the border, or the community? I don't see the later group been effected, I don't see the point for the first, and I doubt it will be worth it for the second group.
