Reasons...
Generally (re Apple vs Windows and to some extent, Linux)...
- quality hardware and software (and integrated to work together)
- lower TCO (in any independent study Mac vs Windows)
- easier to maintain & support (fewer virus and malware headaches, true plug&play, etc)
- more mainstream (average user) apps available

Even Linux would require fairly knowledgeable "tech heads" so some of what you save in not paying for soft/hardware you lose in tech support (unless tech support is also free? happy )

For what you get, Apple is not always more expensive on a feature (capability) for feature basis. Low-ball PCs are often "crippled" (ie, low RAM; shared video; small drives; only CD/R, not DVD/R; etc)

Apple is not that "proprietary"... it now uses much open source and many UNIX ports coming over every day. Most hardware is "off the shelf" parts (drives, monitors, video cards, RAM, peripherals (scanners, printers, etc))... only motherboards are "proprietary".

Plus, with OSX, you know what you're getting... full featured, not "lite" like XP Home and Pro... also, which flavour of Linux to use and support? Each version seems to have it's fans and supporters, strengths and flaws...

It's not so cut-and-dry a decision.
