MS had better come up with a competing product quickly ...
Linux has a product that allows schools, libraries and other such institutions to make full use of their old previously obsolete PCs, not only saving money, but saving the cost of disposing the old equipment. I know of several institutions in my area (one of them a public school) that have saved big bucks by going with Linux Terminal Server using their old PCs and giving them a new life. Another technology that is taking hold rapidly with Linux is mass multiheading where one PC operates up to a dozen monitors, keyboards, mice, sound, etc. each running its own session with management software on the server. It is in essence a clientless server, one PC performing the function of both server and multiple clients. It is to the point now where articles are appearing in the financial press openly questioning whether MS can really keep up with all the new innovations appearing on the open source side given the amount of money companies like IBM are investing in open source and the amount of research going on on the open source side at the university level worldwide. With Longhorn taking forever even in its emasculated state, and MS fighting malware in every direction, it is obvious that MS is struggling to compete. After years of having the OS market to themselves, they are finally having to work for their lunch. And people finally have choices.
