Then go do it!
Here a group of people have an itch to scratch and they are collecting to do it. If you think it is a waste of time, then that is your opinion and with it the majority of hobbies carried out by people are a total waste of time. But here, they obviously feel it is well worth it and there seems to be enough people who feel this way that it might actually get done.

Personally, I like the idea, welcome it, and very thankful to these programmers. I used to like Sun, but I don't really trust them when it comes to management. I think someone else can do a much better job managing Java. Also, I don't like the path that is required to install it on any OS. The workarounds that distros and users have to make are not necessary and could easily be taken out if Sun was more willing.

If you think "C->Java translators or something..." are a more worthy effort, please go find people of similar interests to do it. I, for one, would be very grateful to you.
