An open source version of JRE would enable any open
source distribution, regardless of heritage (BSD, Linux,
Darwin, FreeDOS!), to include the JRE as part of its
distribution.

Whilst the closed source version isn't a huge problem for
say Fedora on x86, spare a thought for those of us working
on more exotic platforms (ppc-linux on embedded IBM
ppc405).

I surprised by the comments both in the article and these
talkbacks that an open source version isn't needed, IT IS.
Sun should have done it long ago, the Apache Foundation
has the resource to achieve it (or at least bring the required
parties together).
