I'll tell you why
Their license is not very liberal at all.

It's a pain in the ass to install Java on the FreeBSD, because of their draconian licensing restrictions.

In order to install Java on *BSD, you have have register with Sun. YOu then have to manaully download around 250MB of source tarballs - (basically the entire source of the Java Development Kit), and then apply specialy made patches done by member of the BSD community just to get it to compile.

This nonsense is all because of their licensing.

If they would just allow some form of redistribution rights in their license, Java would be running on a lot more systems.

Sun likes to shoot themselves in the foot.
