When a proprietary format like PDF is considered "open", why should there be a problem with Java? It's not like proprietary companies per se are opposed by open source supporters -- look at how everyone is in bed with IBM.
My guess is that Sun, in recent moves such as "cozying up" to Microsoft and establishing its own "open" licenses, has made enemies of the Open Source movement. This is just a way to get back at Sun for daring to cooperate with the Devil.
