And I'm telling you that the answer is a wrapper
You could have, for example a "Standard Red Hat 9 Wrapper" that would be open source and could be compiled for use with any kernel. You would than have a standard directory in /usr/share or some standard location on any distribution. In that directory you would dump ANY binary kernel module(s) compiled for Red Hat 9 and the Red Hat 9 wrapper would find it/them and load it/them. The wrapper would provide compatiblility between the binaries and the current kernel just like an ndis wrapper allows you to run wireless drivers and there is a wrapper for network cards as well. If you can run a Windows driver on Linux, their certainly must be a way to run a non conforming Linux driver on Linux.
