If you care about optimizations
then you do not use gcc. Even MS's C++ compiler produces tighter object code than gcc does, one size fits all != optimized object code. If you care about optimizations then you should use a aftermarket compiler that was created for your target processor. Most Linux boxes run on x86 processors and Intel's x86 compiler can be compatible with gcc and it produces better object code than gcc. I'd be willing to bet that this will continue even after gcc 4.0 gets it's issues worked out.
