I don't know if you've seen it yet, but it is a wrapper used for running unsupported NICs under Linux using their Windows NDIS drivers.
I haven't used it myself; I ran across it while researching compatibility with the built-in wireless hardware in some of the newer laptops. It is a project on sourceforge, and it apparently works (or at least gets you connected).
Without a shim like this, I don't see much chance of kernel-version independent drivers myself, because they are inserted into the kernel. I had to recompile modules to go from kernel 2.4.28 to 2.4.31.
